Hey fellow cabin users,
The season is almost over, but I had an idea and wanted to share it with you. As long as most of us can remember, we've had mice at the cabin. We encourage the mice to be in our cabin by providing a food source. Then we deal with them scurrying around, making nests, leaving droppings everywhere, and then trap and kill them. Yuck! As long as there is an open trash can with food in it, we will have mice. No food = no mice (or at least, fewer mice)! To help eliminate this whole dilemma, I purchased a self-closing trash can. It is stainless-steel, i.e. mouse-proof! It fits next to the coal stove or in front of the broom closet. The door still opens plenty wide to bring luggage, groceries, etc. into the cabin. (Perhaps the cabinet under the sink can be remodeled to accommodate it?)
I know we are to obtain approval to bring new items into the cabin. But I brought this with me now, so I would not have to be dealing with mice (or killing mice) while I am here! If you are opposed to using it, the open trash can is still available, but know that as long as an open trash can is used, there will continue to be mice for all to have to deal with. I want to encourage remaining 2020 season cabin users to give it a try, and keep it through the 2021 season, so we can get feedback from more cabin users.
Feel free to leave feedback now, as desired, regarding this idea! Thanks!

Soft-close lid gives plenty of time to dump items into the trash can! Take kitchen-size trash bags.
Thanks Janell! I didn't see a mouse during the 5 days we had the enclosed trashcan in place and the take-out diner/can CLOSED!!! OUT OF BUSINESS!
Thanks! We will pull it out and use it!
Lissy and I have been told that we may NOT put an item in a location it is not traditionally in. Soooo... this trash can will be in the upper middle bedroom closet and is available for anyone to use during their stay at the cabin who chooses not to feed the mice by continuing to use the open trash can. It is much easier to use this new trash can with the foot step rather than pushing that swing door open to finagle putting trash into the current trash can. I say it's time for some type of change with the current trash can situation. Hope the reps will think about it.
